1986 Mustang Re-Wire
Capricious Cabling
The dash wiring was a mess but is now much more organized with the new gauge cluster installed.
The gauges are intentionally tilted so that all the needles will point straight up when in an acceptable condition.
To keep the wires organized during the project, I labeled them with painter’s tape once they were identified using the vehicle wiring schematics. To avoid having to cut any wires in the future, I added trailer electrical connectors (shown below).
During the engine install on my dad’s Mustang, I pulled as much wiring into the cabin as possible. The intent was to keep the wiring out of the high-temp environment of the engine bay, which the eventual installation of twin turbos would exacerbate. This blurry picture on the right is from before I optimized and wrapped all the wiring.
When required, wire splicing was performed by soldering and insulating with heat shrink prior to the final wrap with felt tape (shown below).
